Each lesson in the textbook has four sections for the four language skills読む, 書く, 話す and 聞く, each of which has the same theme. The sections are connected in different ways. For example, the theme of the readings of 読む recurs in the compositions of 書く, in the dialogues of 話す and in the listening material of 聞く. Another example is that the grammar patterns and expressions used in the lectures also appear in the listening tasks. This connection allows the four skills to be developed in a natural and balanced way. The vocabulary and kanji lists are gathered in a separate appendix（別冊）, so that they can be consulted together with the textbook material.

The lessons in each volume are followed by a ‘Review’ section for further study. In Part 1, this consists of a review of initial grammar points, while Part 1 contains activities to expand knowledge of words and expressions. Both volumes also include a section on kanji in Brush-up. Grammar comments and vocabulary estimates are translated into English.
